I was wondering if anyone knew about a printer's block I have.  It is about 1 inch X 1/2 inch X 3/4 inch (Height).  It is made of four equal width layers of wood pressed onto each other.  It then has a metal face for the stamp's symbol, which is appears to be a native american bird / eagle.  The edges of the metal are broken off around the eagle, and there are four nails / tacks remaining at the corners holding the metal in place.  I bought this at an antique store, and the store owner said it was from an estate sale who's owner had a ton of blocks and was also involved in Boy Scouts.  The words "Bishop's Lodge Santa Fe" are written in pencil on the side.

Just curious if anyone could place this block.  It looks old and worn...

Thanks.

It sounds as though it is a printers block from the 1960s - 1970s. The oldest blocks would have used a solid wood backing, as opposed to the pressed wood backing of this one. Feel free to post a picture and we may be able to offer further details?

Thanks for the question!

My little Baltimorean No.6 (Baltimore) Press made it onto Briar Press Museum. Check it out, fifth one down from the top. Although the museum is under construction, the pictures are still avaialble.

I deleted the picture from two of the posts. Unfortunately that's a PNG file and way too big to be duplicating here, I think? I have to massage my bandwidth or I will be banned. 54

I right clicked and noticed you would be using Photobucket's bandwidth anyway.  18

That is correct, I use them for all my photo's not realted to my site(s). We're really eating up some of photobuckets bandwidth. We're on the paid account but it is pretty cheap. Better than loading up your server. Until I hooked up with you, my picture size for a jpg was about what my png are running now. Since you straightened me out on photo's, my jpg's are much smaller. a04

With PNG's you can save them over and over without loss. JPG's are ok too and smaller in size and they will stay looking new if you do not resave them. Thats the only catch. So, if you place the images on your server and keep a copy of the original, theres not much of a problem or loss using them.

When someone finds an image that they like on the web, thats one of the mistakes that they make when they download it. It will ask whether you want to save or save as. save as means your renaming it and thats where the loss comes in but is not too bad if only done once or twice at the most.

I have seen people save an image as image1.jpg, continue working and after the changes save it as image2.jpg and later to image3.jpg This is a definate no-no. After the initial name of image1.jpg, just hit save, make a change and then hit save. No loss this way.

This pic was a jpg when I sent it to Briar Press. They made the right choice and changed it to PNG. It will get viewed a whole lot over there. I just use jpg's now. Unfortunately the "save as" option only gave me PNG or Bitmap. I would think a png would be better than the bitmap?

I currently have no software that allows me to change a png to a jpg. Lost that with my last computer. Once I get a new software that will allow me to do it, I will begin editing my gallery pictures.

No saving my pictures more than once. It's bad enough that it effects the quality, it also loads your system with redundant photos. a02

I like png's for smaller pics. The size does not come into play that way. I will look around and see what kind of image editors I have and there are a ton of them on the web. Go to download.com or tucows.com and find one with a good rating or let me know if you want Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks or Paintshop and I'll send you one.
