Gil
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.  Great information, but it sounds a bit more than I want to do to test a piece of jewelry.  Quick and simple works best for me.   Smilie   I know others have done the stone test for silver and it works for them.  I need to get some fresh solution for testing, and give it another try.

Your input is very much appreciated.  Have you thought about designing and patenting a silver test kit, simple and chemical free, using the principles you mentioned?  Something that could read thru the outer layer to determine if an item is solid silver or only plated, and, especially, where no chemicals come into contact with the piece.
